What Do You Do When Someone Gets Your Name Wrong?

Words That You Just Can't Seem To Pronounce...Like Stanley T :)

As we all know, Stanley T has the habit of mispronouncing almost everything. The other day Rich, yet again, called him out on a name he mispronounced and Stan reacted by saying “Whatever man, you know what I mean.” But Rich pointed out that to the person whose name he’s mispronouncing, it probably is a big deal. What if people called Stan, Stu? He would not like that very much.

Ryan has had people call him Wyatt on the phone but he doesn’t get bothered, he just goes with it. SiriusXM Hits 1′s afternoon host is named Kid Kelly, but there is someone at the office who calls him Mark. Kid just goes with it and lets him call him Mark. Also, when Rich was dating and would be at bars introducing himself, a lot of people would think he said “Chris” or Rick, and instead of fighting to correct them in a loud bar, he just went with it

For some reason, we also have trouble calling our intern by his real name, Eric. So far he’s gotten Kevin, William, and intern.

Has anyone ever called you by the wrong name? Did you get offended or do you just go with it? Do you correct them?

The best way to deal with someone who has been calling you by the wrong name for a while is to make light of the situation. If someone called you Michelle for instance, say “Hey, everyone here whose name is Michelle, raise your hand.” Don’t raise your hand. Once the person clues in that you’re not raising your hand say “Hi, let me introduce myself, I’m Sarah.”

my name is Jonathan P Mitchell and since the 3rd grade everyone calls me JP. Well for some reason there are people that i meet that can’t get that right I’ve been called AJ TJ JD JB BJ PJ JJ DJ JZ pretty much every letters but the two in the right order. I try to go with it while they are there but after i always start laughing because it became JP to make it easier to remember and still get called the wrong name

  7. Ehh it don’t bother me, just let it go. To this day soem guy at work thinks my name is Wayne, when everyone else calls me John. I mean Wayne is my middle name but ya it don’t bother me.

  8. Danna says:

My name is pronounced Dana, but when I was born my mom wanted it different, she stuck an extra “n” in. Here in south Florida, we have a large Hispanic and am always called “Donna”. I correct people all the time, if not they’ll never know!!!

  9. Randi says:

This is worse than having your name pronounced incorrectly. I’m a girl named Randi. Do you think people assume I’m a boy when they call or send letters? ALL THE TIME. I’d rather have some mispronounce my name than assume I’m a boy!

  10. Some people call me Richard and I usually correct them after the 3rd time calling me Richard. But, there’s a few people, no matter how often I’ve corrected them, they continued to call me Richard, so I just let ‘em think I’m Richard.

I get it all the time.. but it doesn’t bother me. Sometimes I correct them, sometimes I don’t. I guess it depends on if it’s someone I will be talking to again or not. But I used to work in a senior establishment where their generation would have never heard of a name like mine. So I got Michaela, Nicole, Vicki, etc.. every week!

  12. Ashley says:

I always get called Amber, Angel, Alice, Allison, Ashlynn (Which is kinda close to my name).

  13. Meghan says:

Nah being called the worng name doesn’t bother me in fact I find it rather entertaining. Especially at a bar, it gives me almost like an alter ego. I get called Morgan, Michelle, once got called micheal. It’s all good though

  14. Joel says:

    LOL @ Jonathan Mitchell

He’s really bent out of shape about that. ;0)

  15. Kathleen says:

Sorry, but it totally bugs me. I go by my full name. Have forever and ever. My immediate family still calls me Kate, which is fine, but Kathleen is my name. Not Kathy or Kat or Kath or anything like that. And the nicknames like Kit Kat bug more more than calling me the wrong name. I feel like names are important and that messing them up on a regular basis proves either one is lazy or doesn’t really respect that person. But that’s just me.

  16. Hannah says:

I could care less, if its atlest around what my real name is. Most people call me hanna, like hannah montana. but mine has a german pronunciation. so ill still answer..

  17. Marika says:

My name is Marika… like America but without the A in front. At this point, I have heard every pronounciation there is, but I will also answer to any of them. I still have family members that CAN NOT spell my name… Whatever. It is what it is. Add on top, my last name is Aldrete. Almost like Andretti, but the poor version is what I tell people.

  18. Alexis says:

When I married my husband, he has a niece also with the name Alexis…since we live in a small town we get confused all the time and our birthdays are two days apart! I get the wrong perscriptions, the police officer who pulled her over got us confused. People are always like I know your dad and its her dad not mine! It gets kind of hectic! But I don’t even correct people anymore…its kind of fun to play along!

  19. Helene says:

My name is Helene, in French, which is prenounced like L N, but i get everything from Helen, Heleen, ive even had someone call and ask for Sarah before, and they were asking for me. I dont think my name is hard to prenounce, and I try to make an effort to say other peoples name right, so I dont see whats so hard in saying my name right, since it sounds exactly like the letters L N, doesnt matter where your from you can say those letters in english….so it kinda bothers me haha

  20. Chantel says:

My name is Chantel and some people would pronounce it as Shawntel. In high school I had a teacher who would always get my name wrong I always corrected him but he still did it. Then at work a lady started calling me that and when I corrected her she took that as offensive and we haven’t talked to each other since.

  21. Angele says:

My name is Angele which is french, and most of the time I get Angel or Angie or Angela, I AWLAYS correct cause I hate it, I used to babysit these 4 kids and each one had a different way to say my name. its ANGLE with a E is what I tell most people

  22. Angele says:

oops, ANGEL with an E I meant

  23. David Rodzewicz says:

My name is David but I go by a few nick names as well Dave, Dirty Dave, DD, or Polar Bear, or if intoxicated Dafe. My last name is hard to pronounce so I tell people to forget it and call me Dave. Those are names I respond to if you dont call me one of those and I know you then I wont answer. If I dont know you well I WILL correct you because that name is who I am. I put a lot of time and hard work making that name a name I am proud to have. When my friends hear that they think loyal, friendly, helpful, curtious, cheerful, brave, and patriotic. they hear john and they might think of some jerk in High school. SO my response is to correct them, I am who I am and no one else.
