Stan’s Sack of Scams
With the holidays around the corner, it’s about time you start shopping for those presents! But it’s no surprise that during the festive season, scams run amok – everything from fake merchandise to phishing scams are common. Here are three examples of scams you should watch out for this coming holiday!
‘Package Not Delivered’
You’ve just ordered the perfect present for your loved one and a few days later, you get an email from a source claiming to be UPS declaring that your package won’t be delivered! Although it could very well be UPS, don’t give in too easily – some scammers are phishing for credit card information by claiming to be UPS, so make sure to check for the sources’ legitimacy, and double-check by directly contacting UPS.
‘We Offer You The Lowest Prices!’
Say you’ve found exactly what you’ve wanted for a friend on Amazon. You google, do a little more research, and find a site claiming to retail that same item at a lower price. Perfect! Except not. Some ‘retail’ sites are far from legitimate and sending them your information could be a very bad thing. Either stick to the retailers you trust (Amazon or directly from Store Websites), or do more research on the retailer before you buy.
‘It’s Facebook – what could go wrong’
Say you’re facebooking, like any other day, and you see an ad for a gift you’ve been dying to get your mom. You follow the link and immediately realize – you are not in Kansas anymore. Unfortunately, even Facebook can fall into the trap of fake promotional campaigns and either two things can result – you follow the link (under the impression of its legitimacy) and give them your personal information, or you follow the link and have it spam your wall and your friends walls’. It’s common regardless of the holiday season, so be sure to double-check before clicking any link that seems fraudulent and don’t ever give any of them your personal information until so.
Have a safe holiday everybody and practice good judgement!
