The Chamber of Justice: Moving Out On Your Roommate

judge

This week’s disagreement involves 2 roommates, Molly and Hannah, who are having trouble deciding who gets to keep the furniture now that Molly is moving out and in with her boyfriend. The issue at hand is that not only is Molly leaving Hannah at the end of their lease, but all the furniture in the apartment is hers. Hannah thinks that since Molly is moving in with her boyfriend there will be a doubling up of furniture, so she should leave some stuff in the apartment, which would give her time to refurnish the place. Molly on the other hand clearly thinks the stuff is hers and she spent her hard earned money on it. Technically Molly has the right to take anything that is rightfully hers, but the question is does she NEED to take them and leave Hannah with nothing. From a technical standpoint, yes whatever Molly owns is hers. From the point of being a friend Molly might want to not leave Hannah high and dry to avoid a larger argument in order to preserve the friendship. Rich, Stan, Nicole and Ryan took your opinions earlier and came up with what they think is a fair verdict. Click below to see what it was!

VERDICT: Ultimately Molly’s stuff is hers, but a true friend would not leave another friend with nothing. Molly has several options that would be fair to Hannah and help avoid a larger argument and breaking up of their friendship. Molly could:

  • Let Hannah keep some of the furniture, so that she isn’t left with an empty apartment, and just take a few choice things.
  • Let Hannah buy some of the furniture from her, that way both of them are compensated in some way.
  • Let Hannah hold on to the furniture until it is sold (if Molly chooses to sell any of it or if Hannah doesn’t want to buy it).
  • Take all the furniture if she really wants and or needs to, knowingly putting a strain on their relationship.
