The U.S. Department of Transportation is proposing a ban on peanuts after the mother of young girl with a severe peanut allergy expressed her fear to get on an airplane with her daughter. Ryan believes a total ban on peanuts is unnecessary. After all, only the most dangerous allergic reactions are caused by ingestion.
While only one percent of the general population is affected by peanut and tree nut alleges, it remains the leading cause of fatal and near food-allergic reactions, according to CNN. Do you think nuts should be banned on all flights? Is this mom being a little over protective, or just taking the right precautions for her daughter?

I don’t believe they should be band from all flights. I also don’t think the mother was being over protective. I have a friend that is highly allergic to peanuts, she cannot even touch them without a reaction. I do think that the airlines needs to have alternative to peanuts when handing out any type of snack on a flight. Being considerate of those with allergies would be nice.
Have the kid wear gloves and a mask. And the mother should do so as well. Wherever they go during the day, there is peanut danger. I would think it would be infinitely easier to control the environment on a plane than out in the peanutty world.
No!!!! I love peanuts I don’t care make a no peanut section
Every plane in Canada has Peanut Free snacks…do people think that peanuts are the only snack out there?! We eat pretzels and almonds and cookies. Suck it up people.
Perhaps Canada has more peanut allergies? All schools in our city (a city of over 100,000) have banned peanuts and all day-camps have a requirement for peanut friendly lunches. Sure, it sucks to have to eat something other than PBJ, but you get used to it…and our kids don’t know any different. Currently my children prefer “Peabutter” to the real stuff…it’s made from Pea’s, give it a try some time.
just keep epi-pens handy… we carry at all times.
Wow! I could not believe the ignorance spoken over the radio this morning. My son has a severe tree nut allergy. He has in the past drank from a soda can that someone else was eating peanuts that caused him to wind up in the ER for treatment.
Although 2nd hand smoke will not cause you to wind up in the ER it has been banned on all flights. Tree nut allergies can cause someone to wind up in ER. Attacks can cause serious harm to a person in 8 minutes. I don’t think pilots would be thrilled for an emergency landing to deal with a situation like this. It’s better to get rid of nuts off a confined space where incidental contact could happen. Why not just play it safe. Are people that addicted to nuts that they have to have them during a flight? Give me a break have them before you get on or have them at the airport bar during your next layover. Ignornace is bliss in America. Over 12 million people suffer from food allergies in the US alone. Every year there is reported over 300,000 emergency visit to an ER caused by food allergies. People wake up, live the golden rule, do unto others as you want done to you. I think the morning mash up crew who laughed all morning who think this topic is a joke should appologize on air for their ignorance.
I am a five year old peanut allergic kid, so my mom is going to voice my opinion.
I am deeply disturbed by the way Morning mash-up handled this subject today. I am demanding a public apology from the Mash up crew in the name of those who suffer from this condition.
Please watch this video http://www.youtube.com/FAANPAL to learn about the gravity of this matter and to realize that this is NO JOKE. For those who are ignorant and spoke this morning I need them to be aware about one crucial thing:
In case of an emergency, the use of one epinephrine shot saves the life of a person who went into an anaphylactic shock (caused by accidental ingestion of peanut/nuts) for only EIGHT MINUTES, when symptoms can reoccur. And then what? The pilot will have to land the plane for immediate Emergency care, which I think would cause more chaos than simply ban the peanuts from flights.
I too was deeply disappointed in the cavalier way this topic was handled this morning. My four year old son is severely allergic to peanuts. I definitely don’t want to take away anyone’s rights but I just think that substituting a snack on a flight is not that big of a deal when the alternative could possibly KILL my son. I am always proactive about carrying his epi-pen and bringing our own safe snacks for him, but what I can’t control is the person who is sitting next to him or the person who was in the seat before him. And to suggest, like Ryan did this morning, that “the kid should just never fly” is absurd. Ryan and the other hosts who laughed and made light of this young girl’s situation and the whole topic of food allergies in general should most definitely apologize. I have really never listened to this show before today and believe me after today I never will again.
Wow! I listen to the show every morning and cannot believe this. Until you actually have a kid with allergies it’s hard to understand. But seriously, you’d risk people’s lives on an airplane or having an emergency on a plane for peanuts, give me a break. Allergies are serious; can you imagine your kid or best friend having anaphylaxis on a plane and not being able to help them after the epi-pen wears off just because you wanted your peanut. Come on..
I have been a fan of XM20 since 2008. I, my family, and friends, will NEVER listen to that station again after witnessing the ignorant and uneducated talk that went on this morning regarding people with peanut allergy. First of all, I’d like to say that most people that have peanut allergy also have food allergies to several foods. Life is a death sentence with every bite you take. I am the proud mom of a 16-year-old daughter who went into anaphylaxis at only 18 months old from ingesting a very small amount of peanut butter…we did not even know what was happening at the time. Since 1993-1994 the incidence of food allergies has increased; perhaps something to do with the food chain, we do not know. All I can say is anyone who does not “wear the shoe” cannot speak for these people. Do you know what it’s like to have to constantly ask about your foods’ ingredients and try to live a life that is “normal” for most?? We carry epipen injectors and benadryl to protect ourselves, but do we need to place our children in a “bubble”? Do they not have the right to live a life just as “normal” as anyone else? Giving our daughter peanut, or subjecting her to a plane full of people who are all popping open bags of peanuts with the peanut dust flying in RECIRCULATED air is just as good as putting a person in a “FLYING COFFIN”…we are VERY PROACTIVE AND RESPONSIBLE FOR OURSELVES, but should we give YOU AND YOUR KIDS CYANIDE???? FOOD ALLERGIES KILL. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. YOU can do without your bags of peanuts in flight…eat them in the lobby while waiting for your plane to arrive. Have them when you get off the plane. No one is saying you can’t have them. BUT, why KILL someone else for them? And…why should our kids NOT attend ballgames, plane trips, and other normal events, just because of your uneducated experience…as was suggested by the ignorant DJs (of whom my family, friends, and I USED to be a fan)?? If I recall correctly, this same ignorant bunch of so-called “professionals” made some uneducated and hurtful remarks regarding folks with Downs Syndrome not too long ago. Good luck to each of them with their kids…or future children they may have…they, too, could very well have food allergies…then you’ll see just how much of a “LAUGHING MATTER” their kids are. We’re talking about lives here, people. Don’t speak and joke about what you don’t know. What’s next? Laughing, perhaps, about women with breast cancer? Needless to say, we will NEVER listen to XM20 again.
In my family, there is only my son who has life-threatening allergies to nuts. Many other cases are similar with one or two members with this condition. We have to learn to live a new way of life (mostly in fear) when we travel. Not one person who was involved in the today’s Morning mash up show seemed to realize that the family of an allergic child gives up the consumption of peanuts EVERY DAY of their lives. They do this in order to maintain a safe environment for the child with severe allergies. The mash up crew and the interviewed people may have to give up their “precious” peanuts while on a flight 2-3 times a year perhaps? So, put this on a scale and see how decadent their hypocrisy really is…
The people who think a peanut allergy is like being allergic to pollen or other irritants show their ignorance. Peanut allergies are very life threatening, not just the inconvenience of a runny nose or watery eyes. My son has a sever peanut allergy. If he consumes peanuts, even a tiny piece of one, he will stop breathing in less than 1 minute because his throat swells shut and he cannot breath or swallow. He has had 2 reactions, due to other people having peanuts around him, and each reaction gets worse. We carry epi-pens to use in case of emergency. But, we are “lucky” that he has to ingest the peanuts. Other people are susceptible to the same reaction by breathing the dust of peanuts. The ideas that the morons who called or wrote in of using masks and gloves, or not feeding them in the row that the child or person is in, or that the people with the allergy don’t fly, shows their level of ignorance. If I suggested to anyone that had a bee allergy (and was susceptible to an anaphylatic reaction) that they be locked in an airplane full of bees at 20,000 feet, the reaction would be very different that the reaction about peanuts. The truth is, they are the same to people who have this allergy. It may be an inconvenience for someone to not have their 0.5 ounce bag of nuts on a flight, but to someone who has this life-threatening condition, its not an inconvenience, its a matter of life and death. None of you on this show would put someone you love and care about deliberately in harms way. How can you responsibly suggest or encourage a debate that is devoid of facts? All of you mocked what this allergy is. If you can’t imagine what it is like, watch your 5 yr old child, who was handed peanuts by at another adult stop breathing and have to be rushed to the hospital. Listen to them say to their parent that they can’t breathe. Watch them as their eyes close as they pass out and you wonder if they will be ok. Consider having to inject your child with an epi-pen and rush them to an ER (which you can’t do at 20,000 feet). Maybe then you won’t think some thing this serious is so funny. You should all apologize to your listeners for your ignorance and how you led this “debate”. Maybe you should follow the adage on subjects you know nothing about….”better to remain silent and have people presume you are stupid rather than open your mouth and remove all doubt”….
Holy Peanuts batman!! All this fuss about peanuts…what if someone is allergic to say perfume and colognes….should they not allow people on flights because they smell good? What’s next, no serving shellfish in restaurants because people are allergic to that too? I don’t really care if they stop serving peanuts and serve something else but C’mon! if you’re so sensitive to peoples opinions and thoughts, why do you listen to a radio show that has that kind of content? The morning mashup crew is funny, i don’t think they should apologize for having a few laughs. They made me laugh… Get off your peanut free high horses and just enjoy the show.
Wow Karen! Your own ignorance is showing. A person who is allergic to shellfish would not go to eat at a seafood restaurant. There has been no recorded anaphylaxis reaction to perfume. But eventually everyone does have to travel on public transportation, planes, trains, buses.
I and many others list to the radio especially hits 1 for the MUSIC, not the talking. If I wanted talking I’d listen to TALK radio I’d listen to talk not music. Going to the extreme to make fun of a serious condition was just plain wrong. I think Tony has a great comparison with 20,000 bees on a plane and do you think you won’t eventually get stung? Bottem line more music less talk and there wouldn’t be these conversations.
Karen,
No one is sensitive about people’s opinions and thoughts here. Here is a question for you: Would you get a good laugh if the discussion was about those who have AIDS or cancer, or are handicaped? The discussed topic here was a matter of life and death. Period. What’s to laugh about? It really wasn’t the place and the the nature of the Morning mash up show to even bring this topic AT ALL in a debate. Not only that the hosts were completely disinformed regarding the topic, but also they handled it in a very disturbing way. That’s why the crew need to do the right thing and apologize to those who were affected by the insipidness of their attitudes in this discussion.
I think it is difficult for people who are not touched by food allergies to understand the gravity of peanut allergies.
The recent statistic is that diagnosis of peanut allergy has TRIPLED in the last ten years. Tripled. That is not statistically insignificant.
Only 10% of children diagnosed will outgrow their allergy. That means 90% of them will grow into adulthood with this life threatening food allergy.
There is no way to avoid reaction other than to avoid contact with the food.
Imagine your son, daughter or spouse. Now imagine a peanut butter cookie being enough to make their bodies shut down and kill them.
Now imagine being in an airplane 10,000 feet in the sky surrounded by peanut butter cookies. Even if every other person had a cookie, there would be crumbs EVERYWHERE.
Peanuts are dusty. When air is recirculated, it can pull peanut dust into the air makeup unit and distribute it throughout the plane.
It is okay with me for people to not understand about food allergies, but it is not okay to be ignorant! Freedom of speech only goes as far as it does not impede on other people’s freedom. The station should get educated and make an apology. If they need to be educated, I would be happy to help.
Most of what I already wanted to say has been said. But this is asinine. People can have deadly reactions to peanut DUST – in the AIR. My son is no longer allergic to peanuts, but what the hell is the big dea to eliminate peanuts from airplanes? It’s a FOOD that can be replaced with ANY OTHER food. Now, my son has a life-threatening allergy to dairy, and has Celiac. That is so much harder to avoid than peanuts, I just don’t understand why people can’t give up ONE SIMPLE FOOD for a flight.
This is about peoples – and KIDS – lives. It’s not funny, its not a laughing matter. That’s sick and disturbing. Tell me what’s so funny about it the next time you have to save your child’s life as he’s gasping for air and swelling twice his size. I know that for some people, having peanut dust in the air is like lacing it with poison. And when you have to give that epi-pen, you have 7-8 MINUTES to get to a hospital. MINUTES. How freaking likely is that when you’re how many feet up in the air?!?
Grow up and start caring about someone OTHER than yourself.
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network issued a response to the Department of Transportation’s proposal for managing peanut allergies on airplanes. Take a look: http://www.foodallergy.org/page/dot-proposal
god…just don’t fly delta…theyre the only ones still serving peanuts…if you care so much, you think you’d know at least that right?? Instead of just repeating the same old stuff over and over and over and over……just a thought.
Now.. back to my pb & j..have good peanut free lives people!!
Karen – I hope this doesn’t come out wrong, but I hope you choke on your pb&j sandwich and gasp for air and then i hope you pass out and go to the er.
Now, I think that is funny! Have a good life!
I can’t agree more with karen! If someone is allergic to peanuts then avoid flying! Some people are allergic to perfume and scented lotions so are they going to ban you off the plane if you smell nic?…i dont think so! Im not saying that i dont care about those with the allergy…but people who dont have it shouldnt have to give up anything for them if they dont want to.
