I don't expect gifts or flowers, but of course I won't complain if my fiance decides to give them which some years he has and some not. And I'm honest in saying I don't complain if he doesn't. I call it a Hallmark holiday myself. We usually just have dinner out that day, nothing overly fancy, just a nice sit down meal. I am flexible on the subject. I don't see why people don't realize that those two days are about the feelings in your heart towards the people around you and not about buying things to give those people. The best gift you can give someone for valentines or Christmas is something that comes from the heart!! I think if you really care for and love the person your with, you'll tell them everyday instead of just one day a year that is set aside for couples. I personaly don't have any use for valentines day anyways since I'm always single on that day.. And guess what.. I'M HAPPY WITH THAT!! I would rather my husband know I love him daily instead of once a year, plus that money is better spent on something we both want and can use year round (like surround sound or a tv that doesn't have a line down the middle:)) p.s. We don't even celebrate our wedding anniversary for the same reason.
