Restaurant Cleanliness Ratings: To Post Or Not To Post? Do You Even Want To Know?

While ordering breakfast this morning it reminded Rich and Ryan of an article they read where the grade of restaurants cleanliness will have to be displayed int he window of the establishment. Nicole says if it’s one of her favorite spots and it gets a poor grade she would probably eat there anyway.

Some of the best places are ones that look like hole-in-the-walls! The diner they go to every morning for breakfast is definitely not the cleanest, but they still stuff their faces with the food and tell everyone how good it is. Ryan says it depends on how dirty the kitchen is.

If the report on the restaurant is detailed and says there are roaches and rats and dirt everywhere then we’d probably shy away from it, but if it’s not completely spic and span it’s not a deal breaker. Is it even possible to get a great score on cleanliness? The combination of food establishments being fast paced environments, with the combo of so many different ingredients, storage areas, and the hot and cold areas things are stored make it hard for any place t be perfect.

There are so many places that you know are not completely clean but they have the best food. Would you eat at a restaurant if you knew the kitchen wasn’t totally clean?

This post reminds of the show Kitchen Disasters. It was all about renovating restaurant kitchens and I swear most of them were completely foul. I wouldn’t go out to eat for a while after watching that show. I’d rather just not know and enjoy my food!

I’m a restaurant inspector in Kentucky, and we have been posting the scores of the inpections for about a year now. The public is really liking the fact that they can see how clean the restaurant is before eating there. Also the “hole in the wall” restaurants usually score better than the “high class restaurants.”

My son and future daughter in law are in the hospitality business. They are always checking the DIA website for restaurant inspections. It’s public knowledge in the Iowa. We always ask them for a restaurant before going out because we know it will be clean, just like at home. Who wants to eat in a dirty, filthy restaurant? Not us.
